Save the Best for Last

Every Camp Spark ends the same way. The balls get put away. The cones are stacked. The last Otter Pops disappear before they have a chance to melt. Empty chip bags somehow end up everywhere, and we're all covered in sweat after an hour of running around with kids who somehow have endless energy.

But that's not the part I look forward to. The best part is what happens during those last five minutes. Parents start walking onto the field to pick up their kids, and suddenly it's impossible to get the campers to leave. One more shot. One more race. One more pass. They drag their feet toward the parking lot because, in their minds, camp isn't over yet. Then the parents come up to us.

"Thank you." "We'll be back next week." "My son hasn't stopped talking about Camp Spark." "My daughter woke up this morning asking if today was camp day."

They're simple words, but they mean everything. I don't think parents realize how much those conversations stick with us. After weeks of planning, emailing, organizing volunteers, finding equipment, setting up fields, and making sure every camper has a great experience, hearing those few sentences makes every late night worth it. The smiles do the same thing. Not just the smiles after scoring a goal or winning a game but the ones you catch when a camper high-fives a teammate they met twenty minutes earlier. The smile after finally dribbling through all the cones without losing the ball. The smile while sitting on the turf eating chips and an Otter Pop with a group of brand-new friends. These are the moments I remember.

Sports only last an hour, but the excitement lasts much longer. Every week, kids leave our camp sweaty, exhausted, and somehow asking if they can stay longer. That's why we do this.

It's not about perfect drills or creating the next professional athlete. It's about giving kids one hour where they can laugh, run as fast as they can, and leave happier than when they arrived. And every time a parent smiles and says, "Thank you," it reminds me that Camp Spark is doing exactly what we hoped it would do.
